Eczema & Treatment

Eczema is a treatable malfunction
of the skin's immune system.

Cause of Eczema:  Eczema is initiated by an irritating agent that produces an inflammatory skin reaction.  This agent could be a chemical in a fabric or in a skin care product or laundry detergent.  It could be a chemical in an oral medication or in food.  The agent varies by individual chemistry but always results in irritation, followed by inflammation.  The skin produces a volume of inflammatory and reactionary chemicals called cytokines, some inflame the skin and others repair (heal) the skin.

Skin Reaction: Regardless of the specific offending agent, the skin has basic response patterns to injury or inflammation, whether the injury is eczema, a bacterial infection, a viral infection, a cut, a burn or even sunburn.  Since the skin is not capable of distinguishing one form of injury from another it responds in similar patterns (more or less) to each of these injuries.  Chemicals that promote inflammation are produced initially and give way to the chemicals that promote repair/healing.

Skin Biochemical Reactions: With eczema the initial irritating agent leads to inflammation of nerve fibers just below the surface of the skin.  These nerve fibers are in close proximity to specialized cells call macrophages.  When irritated or inflamed, the nerve fibers produce enzymes (such as endopeptidase enzymes) that stimulate macrophage cells to produce a chemical commonly called histamine.  Histamine causes a red puffiness in the skin and a strong itching sensation, as seen with eczema, or as seen with contact with Poison Ivy, as another example.

Other cells within the skin (macrophages, keratinocytes, fibroblasts, etc.) respond by producing numerous chemicals, some involved with inflammation and others involved with repair/healing processes.  The volumes and ratios of these chemicals usually follow normal and predictable patterns.  From skin scrapings and punch biopsies, eczema lesions reveal unusually high concentrations of the highly inflaming cytokines, specifically interleukin-1, interleukin-6, interleukin-8, tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interferon-alpha.

These cytokines plus histamine maintain the hyper-inflammatory conditions consistent with eczema.  These inflammatory agents promote the skin to continue producing more histamine and more inflaming cytokines, creating a self-perpetuating inflammatory condition that inhibits the repair/healing process.

This chemical combination also promotes the rapid production of epidermal cells (skin cells) causing excess cellular debris on the skin's surface.  Frequently the skin's lipid barrier (protective oil mantle) is disrupted, which adds to the dryness and inflammation that is typical of eczema.

Control of Eczema: Clinical tests conducted over the past several years have shown zinc pyrithione to be an effective element in controlling eczema.  In these studies patients achieved significant results, including complete remission of their symptoms.  None of the patients experienced any side effects.  Patients reported a significant reduction in itching 20 to 30 minutes following application.  Redness and inflammation progressively disappeared within a matter of a few days.

Zinc pyrithione is a histamine blocker, thus helping relieve itching and redness.  It is antiseptic, reducing bacteria and potential of bacterial infection that may result from physical injury caused by scratching or disruption of the skin's protective lipid barrier.  The effectiveness of zinc pyrithione in treating excess cellular production and cellular debris from dandruff, eczema, psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis has been well documented.  These collective characteristics made zinc pyrithione an excellent component, as one element within the Dermatitis Care formulation.

BiON added five other highly refined plant extracts.  Specific extracts of green tea, for example, block histidine decarboxylase, an enzyme responsible for the production of histamine.  Other extracts from green tea act as specific inhibitors of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interferon-alpha.  Still other plant extracts were selected for their ability to block interleukins 1, 6 and 8.

Dermatitis Care blocks the inflammatory chemicals that become self-perpetuating and promote eczema.  It allows the beneficial repair/healing cytokines to dominate and heal the initial skin injury.  It produces control (remission) of eczema in over 80% of cases.  It stops the itching and inflammation within one to two days.  It produces significant visible improvement within three to four days.  In most cases eczema is blocked (controlled) on the third to fourth day.  The healing process begins and continues over the next fourteen days.

Dermatitis Care ingredients are absolutely safe.  Each ingredient is approved by the FDA for use in over-the-counter skin care and cosmetic products and has no side effects.  In fact many of the ingredients are derived from common food sources such as green tea and avocado.

Dermatitis Care Versus Prescriptive Drugs: Corticosteroid drugs, frequently prescribed to treat eczema, have significant side effects limiting the length of time these drugs can be used and the frequency.  When over-used they can cause bleeding, retard growth and impair the immune system.  People achieving remission with these drugs may experience a flare-up several weeks later and may not be able to resume this form of treatment.  Dermatitis Care provides an alternative and safer method of primary treatment, rather than corticosteroid drugs.  Or, it may also augment corticosteroid drugs during periods when use of these drugs may not be resumed.
